Sedgemoor auction centre, Somerset Store cattle supplies remained tight at Saturday's (28 January) sale, with buyers wondering whether more stock was available. In all, 501 head went under the hammer, with steers averaging £816 a head and heifers £756. "This could be the year to sell early as 'closer the grass, cheaper the bullock' might be the situation," said auctioneer Robert Venner. "It will all depend on numbers." A well-fleshed Charolais steer topped the day at £1,250, with a Limousin heifer peaking at £1,060.

Dairy cattle sold well, with a super pedigree heifer reaching £2,360. Top-quality heifers averaged £2,040, with best cows settling at £1,970. Trade for stirks was similarly electric, with steers averaging £549 and heifers £492.
