Mastitis, moles and measurements for Adrian Harrison

For once we are not on the receiving end of the wintry weather. All we have had is a few days of sub-zero temperatures and a smattering of snow. When watching the news it makes you wonder what all the fuss is about.

One of the positive aspects of keeping Jersey cows is the low incidence of mastitis. However, recently we have been struggling with ongoing outbreaks throughout the herd. It is really unusual for us as we normally have only a handful of cases in a 12-month period.

Our heat exchange investment was inspected this month as it was part grant aided. The grant issuer wanted to see the electricity bills to see what units had been saved. I said that if she could work it out she was a better person than me. We have had endless estimate readings and changed electricity companies in order to get a better rate.

As a result the information is just nonsensical. The one thing I will say is that the bill isn't any lower and it is roughly the same. It seems to be as soon as we make a saving it is eaten up by price increases so we are continually running to stand still.

The annual mole problem is rearing its ugly head and we got a local expert in. He caught 75 in two days and we were mole free for a couple weeks. He has, however, created nature's vacuum and they are back with a vengeance.
