Irish livestock producers believe the EU is poised to raise the age at which cattle have to be tested for BSE from 30 to 36 months.

"The Irish Cattle and Sheep Association has called for this change for some time and a final decision from Europe is expected at the council of ministers meeting in January," said ICSA president Malcolm Thompson.

The Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers' Association adds that there have been no cases in finished steers, yet testing male cattle between 30 and 36 months £4.1m a year.
