Farmers have a “genuine opportunity” to work more closely with food processors and manufacturers, according English Farming and Food Partnerships.
Research by EFFP found 80% of British food processors and manufacturers would prefer to source raw materials locally, yet only a third do.
According to the organisation, farmers could take advantage of this desire to buy locally to drive their sales.
Stuart Thomson, EFFP associate director, said the farming industry often underestimated the importance of food manufacturers and processors as customers.
“Producers should seriously consider these businesses as important customers and improve understanding of their needs in order to forge more fruitful relationships with them,” he said.
Farmers will be offered advice in closer collaboration at EFFP’s ‘Missing Link’ conference in London on 20 February.
EFFP, the Food and Drink Federation, the National Farmers Union and food processors will be on hand to offer advice on closer collaboration.
If you are interested in attending, email Sarah Moffatt at EFFP or call her on 0207 2130430.
