Crops magazine columnist Stephen Carr was announced as columnist of the year at last night’s (9 May) Periodical Publishers Association awards at Grosvenor House, London.

The award coincide's with Mr Carr's 20th year of association with the Farmers Weekly Group.

"Having not won it on one or two previous occasions, it meant more winning it - it was thrilling to win," he told FWi.

"I’ve always relied on the support of editors over the years and I hope it confirms their faith in me. It’s a tremendous boost to my confidence as a writer."

The PPA awards are the equivalent of the publishing sector’s Oscars.

Crops editor Charles Abel was delighted with Mr Carr’s win. "Stephen has been a key asset for Crops magazine for many years and has created a strong following thanks to his intelligent understanding of farming issues combined with a unique ability to inject humour into his writing.

"He is a key opinion former in the industry and his years of service with the Farmers Weekly group are testament to his qualities and abilities."

Farmers Weekly Group editor Jane King added: "This is a real coup for Stephen and the group. We have a track record of getting short-listed in this category with our columnists and we’re very pleased Stephen’s work has been recognised by the publishing industry."

Farmers Weekly was short-listed for editorial campaign of the year for its Local Food is Miles Better campaign.
