Turkeys on four further units are to be culled as a precautionary measure in the battle against the H5N1 avian (bird) flu outbreak near Diss.
Following initial epidemiological work and veterinary assessment, four further premises have been identified as Dangerous Contacts. These units are within the existing Restricted Zone and is in line with DEFRA’s contingency plans.
A DEFRA spokeswoman pointed out that the dangerous contact was not due to poultry movements. Instead, the units shared staff. She stressed that no birds had moved off the site.
Meanwhile, at Redgrave Park Farm where the virus was confirmed yesterday, culling is still ongoing but DEFRA admitted that it was proving a challenging site.
“At the site, there is no electricity, no water and Animal Health has had to bring onto the site generators, shower units among other equipment,” she said.
She added: “don’t mention mud. It’s like Glastonbury but without the music.”
