Giles Porter hopes to start harvesting his winter barley at Penn Croft Farms, Farnham, Surrey, on Monday (21 July) – about average for this time of year.
“Nothing’s started yet – if it hadn’t have been for the wet week last week we would have probably started the barley this week (w/e 18 July),” he said. The 69ha (170 acres) of Flagon still had some green straw but was nearly ready. “It looks very well – everything looks well.”
Mr Porter dessicated the 283ha (700 acres) of oilseed rape last Friday (11 July), and said it would not be ready until next Friday (25 July). That would be followed by spring barley and 486ha (1200 acres) of wheat.
