Carl Juhl was cutting spring barley at 20% moisture at Little Farms, Saffron Walden, Essex, today (11 August), having started combining late yesterday afternoon.

“It’s yielding fairly well,” he said. The 49ha (120 acres) of Tipple was averaging about 7.4t/ha (3t/acre) so far, with 32ha (80 acres) of Optic to cut after that.
The Robigus, Zebedee, Oakley and Humber were not yet ripe, said Mr Juhl. “The second wheats are starting to look a little bit discoloured. Generally it all looks well at the moment but the forecast is not good.”
Mr Juhl’s Castille and Astrid oilseed rape produced an average yield, at 3.3t/ha (1.3t/acre).
