Paul Phillips was combining between the showers at Broniarth Farm, Newtown, Wales, finishing off the winter barley on Friday (15 August).
The 5ha (13 acres) of Carat averaged 5.6t/ha (2.25t/acre) – slightly below a normal year, he said. “The straw was a little bit disappointing but good and clean.”
He now had 14ha (35 acres) of Gerald winter oats to cut, which were still standing reasonably well. “They’re showing fairly promising signs.”
After that would come the Claire winter wheat and the Lamberto winter triticale, which was still 10-14 days away from ripening, he said.
