New environmental rules, such as the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control regulations, are forcing poultry producers to consider reducing emissions of dust and ammonia from their poultry houses. But getting advice on the best ways of achieving can prove baffling.

This is set to become easier with a new 86-page book entitled Exhaust Air Treatment Systems for Animal Housing Facilities. It gives an overview of the current development status of the techniques in particular regarding the areas of application, treatment principles, specifications for the design of the installations and removal efficiency for odours, ammonia, and dust.

Importantly, it gives costs for the investment and operation of the installations based on the minimum requirements for certified systems. Finally, the book gives information about the consideration of the installations in permit procedures for individual farms backed with practical examples..

Published by The Association for Technology and Structures in Agriculture (KTBL) based in Germany, KTBL believes it is a valuble source of information aimed at helping producers, unit managers and advisers before they make investment decisions on installing an exhaust air treatment system. In addition, it also serves as a basis for planners and experts for the objective evaluation of the different techniques with regard to the possibilities and conditions of planning applications for poultry housing.
