Farmers have reacted with dismay over the announcement
thatthis year's Royal Show is to be the
last.
Last week (3 April), the Royal Agricultural Society of England
wrote to its trustees to say it would be looking at a new programme
of events after the 2009 show.
An RASE spokesman said the society could not continue investing
in an event which there was no longer an audience for.
However farmers have responded angrily to the decision on the
FWiSpace forums.
Blue Grey Coos said the decision was "shocking", while
John Nicholson said it was "appalling news".
Hereford bull said: "I hope the Trustees are hanging
their heads in shame.
"The Royal Show is famous throughout the world as being the UK's
premier livestock event.
"So why create a new image when you have one with 160 years of
heritage accepting that the last 15 haven't been their most
glorious?"
AllyR added: "The loss of the Royal will leave a
tremendous void. It is the flagship of the Agricultural shows.
"The Royal, as with the other summer shows, is also a vital shop
window for the public to come and spend a day with our farmers and
see what is happening in our industry.
"To lose this could be the biggest loss of all."
