Almost finished wheat at Haddon

A broken down combine has called a stop to harvest at Haddon Farm, Bridgwater, Somerset, where Jeremy Walker has nearly finished his own winter wheat.

“We have cut all of our oilseed rape and winter barley, and are now into our own wheat. We’ll pretty well finish it today if we can going again.”

After that Mr Walker had winter barley and wheat to cut for neighbouring farmers.

The Diego and Oakley was yielding better than expected, at 9.3-9.9t/ha (3.75-4t/acre).

“The best Oakley was 10.5t/ha (4.25t/acre) at 79kg/hl, with the Diego we’re cutting today doing 9.9t/ha (4t/acre) on the better bits.

“There is quite a lot of straw, too, at 4.9t/ha (2t/acre).”

The wheat was coming off at 15.5% moisture, and conditions were very dry for doing any other fieldwork, he said.

Saffron winter barley had varied from 7.4-8t/ha (3-3.25t/acre) at 67-68kg/hl, with Flash oilseed rape yielding “reasonably well” at just over 3.7t/ha (1.5t/acre) and 9-10% moisture.

“It went down in a gale and was a bit of a challenge to cut. Conventional oilseed rape on a neighbouring farm was a lot easier to cut, and yielded about 3.5t/ha (1.4t/acre).”

A number of red deer had settled and bred in the oilseed rape, making for some beautiful scenes from the combine, he added.
