Punching through near Norwich

Peter Seaman is combining wheat today (12 August) at Great Farm, Norwich, Norfolk, despite a light rain shower this morning.

“We are punching a good hole in harvest – it has stayed fairly dry here,” he said.

However, the Claire, which was coming off at 15.2% moisture, was yielding at least 1t/ha (0.4t/acre) below average.

“On the light land it was doing 9t/ha (3.6t/acre) but on the very light land today it is just 8.5t/ha (3.4t/acre).

“On the 100ha (250 acres) of heavier land it is not yet fit – even though it was drilled earlier, so that will definitely be better.”

Winter barley yielded just below average, with Flagon at 7.4t/ha (3t/acre) and Maris Otter at 5.2t/ha (2.1t/acre) over a weighbridge.

“We were quite pleased with that. The Flagon did 1.54% nitrogen and the Otter 1.47%.”

Oilseed rape, grown on virgin rapeseed land, also came in slightly below average at 4.7t/ha (1.9t/acre). “We normally do 2t/acre (4.9t/ha) on virgin land.”

Mr Seaman also had 162ha (400 acres) of Oxbridge spring barley left to cut. “I am not overly hopeful – I fear the spring barley has suffered the most. Yields will be well down.”
