Yorkshire harvest tied up

Harvest across most of Yorkshire is now complete, according to Openfield’s northern region manager Nigel Britland.

Most farmers had made the best of the dry spell to finish up last week, and yields had proven variable.

“First wheats on good land have done better than expected, but lighter land crops, second wheats and spring barleys have disappointed,” he said.

“Quality across our region, though, has been outstanding, with some big Hagbergs.”

Oilseed rape yields were excellent, with hybrid varieties providing some consistently high yields in the region of 4.5-5.5t/ha (1.8-2.2t/acre).

“In contrast to many cereals, better-rooted rapes were able to find moisture to fuel yield.

“It just goes to show what can be achieved by planting a crop that can root well, on time and into properly prepared soils.”
