Pleased near Holderness

Peter Caley has finished harvest near Holderness, East Yorkshire, and is pleased with wheat yields.

Viscount, Robigus and Scout averaged 11t/ha (4.5t/acre) across the farm, and all came in between 15% and 20% moisture.

“Quality was pretty good too, with Robigus testing at 76.9kg/hl, 285 Hagberg and 12.36% protein,” he said.

Oilseed rape also yielded well, at 4.5t/ha (1.8t/acre). “Our clay soils have done us a lot of favours this year.”

With more than 600ha (1500 acres) of straw now baled, wheat straw yields were better than last year, but below the longer term average, at 3.7-4.4t/ha (1.5-1.8t/acre).

Winter barley straw yields were good, at 5t/ha (2t/acre).

“We missed a lot of the rain and showers, that have been as close as the Yorkshire Wolds at times,” said Mr Caley.

“Most people around here are finished or within spitting distance of finishing combining.”
