Cracking on at Tibthorpe
Caley Sackur is combining wheat today (22 August) at Lodge Farm, Tibthorpe, Yorkshire, ahead of forecast rain later this week.
“I think we’ve only got today and tomorrow to get on, but we’re over halfway through the wheat now,” he said.
Cordiale second wheat was badly affected by the drought, and yielded a disappointing 6.2t/ha (2.5t/acre).
But the first wheat, Oakley, was running well, at 8.6-9.9t/ha (3.5-4t/acre).
Excalibur oilseed rape performed brilliantly, at 5.6t/ha (2.25t/acre). “It’s the best we’ve ever grown.”
However, Cassata winter barley was also drought-affected, coming off at 6.2t/ha (2.5t/acre).
“The nitrogen content is high, at 2%, so I don’t know if it will go for malting – although the germination is excellent, at 98%.”
Mr Sackur had drilled his oilseed rape, and said ground conditions were perfect following in the recent rain. “It went in beautifully.”
