Harvest 09: Average yields in Scotland

Yields have been about average across Southern Scotland and the borders, with quality holding up reasonably well, says Scotgrain’s Trevor Harriman.

“The vast majority of harvest is now in – and for us, in the main, we are quite happy with quality.”

Most malting barley had done well, although very late cut crops, after the rain earlier in September, had suffered, he said.

“Yields have been very mixed, but probably about average. Wheat yields suffered in parts of the borders where it was drilled into poor seedbeds last year.”

Ground conditions were now fine, said Mr Harriman, with some farmers still sowing oilseed rape into decent seedbeds last week.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
