Lenar tractors - am I unlucky - or are they cr*p

I bought a new Lenar tractor (25 hp) with front loader in April this year.  Within a month, brackets on the front loader had snapped, starter motor had failed, clutch had failed etc. etc. etc.  The useless company who had sold it to me blamed me (despite the fact I'd had the same 2nd hand Jinma for 6 years and it was still working fine) but sort-of fixed the problems - temporarily.  Then they went bust/died/disappeared!  The clutch had gone again, the starter motor had gone again - you get the picture!  Took months to sort it out - the company who now import the tractor were helpful and supplied parts, my local (competent) mechanic put it back together.  I've had it back for two weeks and today another bracket on the front loader snapped and the steering 'went' (hydraulic fluid everywhere - not sure WHAT's happened as it was getting dark.)

I have actually USED this brand new (in April) tractor for about 6 weeks in total - does anyone have one that WORKS - for more than 5 minutes at a time???

What a tale of woe and there really ought to be some recourse, in law, for your case

I do not know the law in this regard, but as a first option I should contact the local Citizens Advice bureau and Trading Standards office. Neither of these enquiries would cost you anything.

The fact is, (providing you were using it for agricultural activities) the product was not Fit for Purpose

There is - of course. But that assumes the company who sold it to you is: 1) still trading; and 2) has assets.

I bought it from Jinma UK in Telford (re-badged as JL Series).  Jinma UK is not answering its phone [post edited at this point]

Like the Jinma (and I have an 8 year old one that was still going strong until 2 months ago but is now awaiting parts that are obviously on a Slow Boat FROM China) they arrive flat-packed and are put together here. Compact Tractors in the South West now have the import agency and they have been helpful - but it's not really their problem. They didn't sell the thing. My mechanic thinks it's a pile of junk (or perhaps what you can EXPECT for £6,500?)  What I'm curious about is if it's this particular tractor that was put together wrong that's the problem - or whether the tractor itself is useless except as a toy!

I was using it for tidying up the muckheap, carting haylage around the fields, harrowing etc.  Nothing particularly demanding.

Re: Lenar tractors - am I unlucky - or are they cr*p

About the loader brackets snapping what kind of size are the haylage bales as it may be worth checking that it is designed to carry the weight. As our Tanco loader on our Ford 6600 (80hp) only has a maximum lifting capability of 1.5 tons and that has a very well built frame that even the former Ford rep said that we would have trouble finding a loader no that is as well built. But even that with a counter weight on the back the steering goes heavy when you lift and carry anything over a ton in weight which then puts stress on steering and hydraulics.

As we have always been told to be wary of a tractor that has done a lot of loader work because they tend to suffer from steering problems as well as probably being worked the hardest. Plus they tend to go though a lot of clutchs when doing loader work do to the fact that people tend to ride the clutch when, wether picking up bales or picking up a pallet. Our clutch rate tends to be about 1 every 1 1/2 to 2 years but then saying that ours does do a lot of work near enough 365 days a year and is going most of the day during lambing as well as hay, haylage and straw carting times.

But then saying that when we first had ours they supplied the wrong bracket which smashed the front of the loader up but they were very good in dispatching the replacement parts and then paid our usual mechanic to fix it.

At the moment our loader is going strong at over 20 years old and the tractor is over 25 years old (old t reg if someone knows what year that is) admittedly that is the second second hand tractor the loader has had due to the fact the main drive shaft from the engine to the gearbox had worn to about the same thickness as cigarette paper. and this one has had a 2nd hand engine and countless clutches, part of the steering arm had to be replaced due to it breaking.

Hello all, my name is Patrick Webb, I am a very upset Lenar tractor owner.  I dont want to type all I have written about this tractor on here because of the time and volume of the content.  I would just like to send you to the forums.  The websites are www.tractorbynet.com which they banned me from, and www.tractorpoint.com  Type in Lenar in the search and you will read about my ordeal with Lenar and the four 4 lemon tractors I have owned.  To all out there, do not buy a Lenar with out buying a wheel barrow and a shovel for back up.  Best of regards Patrick Webb

As Peter correctly pointed out, my employer went to trading standards with 3 machines, 1 was a destoner, tractor and a precision drill, all 3 went back as Peter pointed out as Not fit for purpose. The dealers were obliged and did refund except the tractor which they replaced with a new top spec model.

The first port of call should be trading standards or Citizens Advice Bureau

Re Lenar Tractors, we think they're fabulous little tractors, we have four of them on our estate, they work hard everyday and do far more heavier work than we should really expect of them - heavy trailers up to 4 tons, and 6' rotovators even though we were told to use 5'.  They haven't really given us any cause for either complaint or concern, so when I saw your thread I just had to reply to put on record that we totally disagree with your experience.  We bought four of them from Compact Tractors in Somerset and the way they dealt with us was nothing less than exemplary and professional.  One of our machines has 600 hoors, another has over 400 hours.   We're ordering an extra two for delivery in May 2008.  To be frank,I know we overload our Lenars quite frequently, and some of our men who are East European are less gentle with them than they should be.  I am sure that if you speak with the guys in Somerset they are so helpfull that I sure they would be more than willing to help you resolve any issues you might have, our experience is that the way they dealt with us  from first phone call through to after sales is something that a few of the bigger boys could learn something from, Lenar tractors and the guysdown there get a big gold star from us. Give them a try.

My Mate has a Siromer 254 like a jimma but painted red. It has and adapted Ford 5000 loader on it it is fine expect the steering rams fail for fun. His record was 4 seal kits and a new ram in as many weeks. But is what you pay for Cheap and Chearful occasionally.

Hello all and especially to you (Prospective Dealer), I can't help it, but I find amusement in the postings of other consumers out there that try their luck with Lenar tractors and the Lenar Company. I have spent hours writing and telling others of my experiences with the company and the brand. I am found all over the internet and I do believe I have saved some perspective buyers of Lenar alot of heart ache, or at least those that research the brand before buying. However, as time passes, there are those that get caught unaware of this company's practices and the poor quality of their machines, and end up getting burned. I do not find humor from the misfortunes of others, what I find humor in, is that this company, (LENAR) has not done anything to improve customer relations or product reliability, yet, for one reason or another, they are still permitted to be sold in the United States. I only hope that one day, this company will eventually self destruct. The only good thing is that the price of scrap steel is going up, and hopefully Lenar will find itself at the top of the hill, or rather the top of the scrap pile. That is really the only place a Lenar really belongs. Live and learn. I wish you all the best of luck. Patrick D. Webb, 1 734 439 0686.
