    Re: Best Tractor?

Bluepaint, good V8's? Err Not the V800! Deeres V8, I guess Kinzie never took a Cummins out and put a Deere in! GM's 6.5? They had a few issues, not a tractor engine though. What about the Cummins 903? Where do you stand on the DT466? Make mine the CDC 8.3... I never acually drove a Steiger or Versitile, but understand they are the weapon of choice, especially if you pull scrapers. But a new STX series Steiger isgoing to have plenty of electrics controlling the powershift and fueling and the hitch if it has one. These tractors are great if you are just pulling a big cultivator or a scraper and I see the attraction of big and simple, but tractors doing row crop type work where matching speeds and precise hydrualic control are needed need something with more technology. We had a Challenger on demo and the driver said how much better it would be if it had an IVT (he owns his tractor). Never really had much bother with error codes, the early 40 series would serve them up all the time and mostly thet were false alarms. The MXs PTO quit once and the error code told us it was electrical so we need not get the spanners out. It was a chaffed wire from the alternator and cost 2 inches of insulation tape to fix. I did have a day on a 3788, really good idea spoilt buy rubbish componants. How about a Magnum based 2+2 ??? I also drove an old 1969 Farmall 856, lovely old tractor, not sure were it went wrong when it turned into the 1066, but they might burn me at the stake for saying that... Top three: MX135 by miles Any 3 cylinder Ford, particularly a 1989 ForceII 4610 with H pattern syncro on the collum with 4wd and a close third... Zetor 7540 E, a little cracker 7100, 7200 and 8900 series Mangums too.

Best new tractor:  Just pick one there are so many excellent choices.

Most legendary or best old tractor: toss up between JD 4020 for ushering in the new tractor era with innovative thinking, and a MF 135 for being indestructable and ultra reliable.  Then we left out the 8N Ford, the Caterpillar TEN.... the list is long.

@ nb857..There is only one V8 that i hold in high regard....CAT3208...An unreliable "Throw away" engine, Snappy,Responsive ,Pulls above it's weight.

And in our cold climate is an easy starter that needs no ether . Driven properly ,Don't over or under rev ,Don't overload has behaved well for me,And are Easy to replace being" 10 a penny" in wreckers yards....Don't even think about rebuilding one ..Just drop in a combine motor                             Cummins 8.3/L10/855/N14...IH466...Any ford 000/00/10/Powerstar/Genesis...Cat 3208/3406...Detroit 60 series.....These are "Engines"..?

    Re: Best Tractor?

I like our Ford 6610 as after using a JD 3650 I missed it manuverability. The guy who has worked repairing machinery for year I think loved the Track Marshals but I think some of that is due to the fact that he out 2 in to hibination for several years before they were sold and when the guy came to pick them up he drained the oil and put in the proper stuff in and did the same with the fuel and they both started up first time and drove straight up on the trailer.

But saying that he does like the Fords and MF135 and when we have thought of replacing or looking like we would have to replace one he said to stick with the Fords as he though generally they were reliable and when they did go wrong eaier to fix than a JD as he said although their engines were known to go pourous when you had a problem with a JD it was harder to fix because it was more complicated.

So far our 25 year old plus Fords have been about on par for reliability with our neibours new JD's  and a lot cheaper to fix. The only Fords he hated were the TW's but then he also hated the JD 3050's and 3350's as he had constant problems with those
