    Re: Encouraging Young People

I'd be up for this series idea/article about young peoplegetting into farming.  I'm not from a farming back ground just started working for a local farmer and loved it so much i want a career in the industry.  Bluepaint said about getting given that kit by his Dad, i'm sure i could make a business out of it, but I would be unable to afford to buy anything of that nature or be able to be financed by anyone else, so its kind of irrelevant.  As the average age of most farmers in the UK is in the mid-fifties I think the industry really needs a younger input, but getting this input into the industry iss a lot more difficult and for people like me and Matt (I gather you're also not from farming stock) its even more difficult!

Can I give some advice about ways you could encourage more young people to enter the agricultural sector, rather than recruitment simply at agricultural universities & institutions. I am not aware of whether you already have recruitment drives or the Young Farmers organisations is possibly considering whether to recruit people into the industry from mainstream urban situated universities? I attend a London university, and still seek to enter the agricultural sector; however, there is no specific point of call. Would anyone know whether the Universities of London provide advice about careers in agriculture or whether there are recruitment drives by agricultural organisations?

May I say that I absolutely agree with ideas of recognising young people for their contribution to agriculture and farming and therefore commend anyone that seeks to do so!

    Thanks
