    Re: End of Cheap Food

I watched this last night and thought it was quite a useful programme. Much of it was about a family who usually spend £200/week on groceries and were feeling the pinch because of price rises - but they discovered that by buying seasonal food and cooking from scratch they could live off less than £50 week and eat much better.

The reaction of the mum when she found out how little her food had cost was brilliant. Because she didn't complain that it involves more effort (which it does - lets face it) but focussed on the money she might save - £7000 a year (or as she put it enough to buy a car).

I thought it was good as it was showing people how they might alleviate the problem of rising food prices - rather than just moaning about them.

I watched it too, thought it was quite good, got the point across and was informative - it was good/ interesting seeing her reaction to the idea of saving 7 grand though!

I watched it and was horrified, £200 a week on food, I spend £75 on just food and there are 6 of us!!

Of course food prices fluctuate. Heck I bought rice last month, a huge bag for £12.00, the same bag is now £20.99. A shock but still cheap food when you consider it will last nearly 6 months. If it cost £30 it would still be reasonable. Maybe some of these "food is too expensive" types should dig up their back gardens and grow their own? Or would that be asking too much?

I've got a confession - we spend about £80-100/wk on food and that's just for two. But I do that in the knowledge that we could live more cheaply and that I know we can afford to do so at the moment. Should my circumstances change then so would my shopping habits. Nor would I moan about rising prices.
