    stupid diesel prices

Just want a few prices of what you lot out there are paying for the red stuff, just had a delivery dropped off last week that worked out at nearly 62 ppl. Think i'm going to buy some shares in shell at this rate. When is it going to level.....out as our supplier keeps telling us it will do. Any views?

Yes, high prices discussed in this forum : http://www.fwi.co.uk/Community/forums/p/12255/75170.aspx

I paid just over 50p/l two weeks ago to fill all my tanks up for spring. Once the beet is all in, I will fill everything I have got up well before harvest. My uncle has a garage near Leeds and they have had to restrict how much customers can take per fill as they are running out and cant get deliveries fast enough.

Dont see there's much you can do about it.

There is enough oil to go around. It's just that the speculators are pushing the oil price up as they move out of stocks and into commonities. Wasn't oil at $111/barrel for may delivery? So it will continue rising until at least May.

I wrote that my dealer said prices were due to level out at some point in the near future, well just heard from a neighbour that they have put it up again!. Bit sick of being treated like a mushroom ie kept in the dark and fed bulls*it.

just got a machine for oil seed rape at college at the moment, it costs £5,500, it's only a little one. Gets the oil out fairly easily and then you get the waste, that i think we're using for feed, seems to pump it out steadily, but i think it has to be kept an eye on for blockages. Possibly the way to go though! (but newer tractors can't be run on it as it's too thick and blocks the injectors)

I have a really big problem with these baby presses - surely it makes better sense for a load of farmers to each invest £5k in an uber-press! Farmers are so poor at co-operating it makes me cry.

The way to go is for the government/EU/NFU to pay me to go round to every farm and beat the owner with a stick until the realise the huge benefits of scale and co-operation.

well I can't speak for everyone, but we're grumpy old blokes who like to keep ourselves to ourselves (not that i'm particularly old, being 18) But it's just nice to be indepentdent and run your own business. Also people fall out, and then what happens to that press..... who broke it, who repairs it, who stores it, someone didn't clean it well, someone's always using it when some else want's it.

If farmers could work together then there would be more profit in farming, although then prices would go down, and all that stuff.....

No, it is more personal. Farmers like to think they are all friendly, but in reality they are all wishing their neighbour would fail so they can buy their land. All crazy, as we now know hedge funds/bankers/ horsey types will always outbid, but hey-ho.

We belong to a central store. It is a measure of how crap they are and how lacking in acumen they are, that they store thousands of tons of rape and have huge sheds, yet cant get it together to build a biodiesel crush of a reasonable scale. Damnit, the whole idea is that it is central for people to go collect their fuel! And they have access to lots of money. That way the issues you have outlined are resolved.

Farmers can work together. The problem is that farmer owner businesses are a great idea. Farmer controlled businesses (except farms) are usually a terrible idea.
