Foot-and-mouth - latest developments including overnight news

A colleague has just discovered that DEFRA is due to make an announcement at 10.30 regarding a suspected case of foot and mouth.

A control zone has been set up in an area, thought to be located in the South East.

    More as we have it.

30 miles from previous outbreak near Egham in Surrey. BBC is reporting that preemptive slaughter of animals is taking place. Don't yet know what species.

We're picking up from contacts that the unit has both cattle and pigs. But yet to confirmed by DEFRA. Everything seems to be moving very quickly on this one. Makes me fear the authorities are not just being cautious. Test results expected later today.

The BBC 1.00 news is reporting the case as confirmed - looks as though your fears were justified Isabel!

Sadly it does seem that way. What a nightmare.

For reminders of the advice from DEFRA here is a link to the main F&M page.

This means the national movement ban is back in place, I'm afraid.

it would be nice if defra kept industry leaders in the loop, rather than having to hear reports on the news !!

I used to live not far from Milton Park Farm and from what I remember they had a fair sized pig unit.

I don't want to alarm anone but I've just looked at the map of Milton Park Farm on the Surrey C.C. Website and it backs onto a research laboratory!

    Right here's the latest...

As you will have seen BBC etc are reporting that it is a confirmed case. We've been told by our sources that it is pretty much a "dead cert" but DEFRA has not yet given official confirmation. Not sure why there is this confusion. I guess until DEFRA confirms then my comment about the movement ban was premature.

    More when we get it..

Not sure if this is the farm. There are a couple being mentioned. As for this laboratory I think it is something to do with Proctor and Gamble so nothing ominous. Reaserch into hair care products, skin care items and cosmetics, oral care products, fragrances, deodorants, and respiratory medicines etc

It's Rusham Park Technology Centre, and if you Google that you will see that there are quite a number of different laboratories on the site.  Also adjacent to Milton Park Farm is a large country mansion clearly visible on the helipcopter shots on TV.  This is the Headquarters for operations in Europe, Africa and the Near East of SC Johnson Ltd.

I am sorry you have been hit with this again, I know your livestock people don't need this triple whammy of foot and mouth, high feed prices, then foot and mouth again.  I can only imagine the stress some of you are under.  Seems to me that Pirbright could still be the source of this, if only indirectly.

    Re: New Foot-and-mouth control zone?

I don't like to be facetious in the face of what could turn out to be another disastrous episode, but the fields alongside the laboratories were the site of the Royal Egham Show at the end of August.

Of course there were no sheep, cattle or pigs, but there were guinea pigs and rabbits.  Now the DEFRA site tells us that rodents are susceptible species (except for pets) and I assume the rabbits and cavies concerned were classed as pets so therefore could not have been infected but I wonder if any of them came from Pirbright?
