    Tractor driving test at 16

DVLA tell me that I can take a test for tractor driving at age 16, but not been able to find a suitable tractor to use - has to be under 2.45m wide and good condition - mirros, lights etc.

Shouldn't most tractors running on the road have to comply with this? I know you can go to a 3m width on the road but a tractor on standard tyres shouldn't be wider than 2.45m.

They should - but not where I work! Thanks for reply, have tried colleges etc but they expect you to use your own tractor for the tests. So I am stuck at present!

dont worry about the width too much, when i took mine the lights failed on my jd 2650, the chap gave me 5 mins to get another tractor so i rolled up in a 6920s which must be nearly three metres wide and he said that they dont tend to worry about the width too much - good luck

Re: Tractor driving test at 16

    Hi,

My son recently took his test at 16. However even though he has passed his test there are still restrictions on vehicle width and also it is only legal to pull single axle trailers or close coupled twin axle trailers.

A good website which gives all this information is www.agricultural-vehicles.co.uk.( Look at the "questions" button). This gives the legal definition of "close coupled" etc. If you are still unsure the website will reply to your questions.I found that the police were of little help as were the DVLA. They only take an interest when someone has an accident and then you are taken to the cleaners - BEWARE!

These restrictions automatically disappear on your 17th birthday

    Good luck in your tests!

i took my test in a case international 956xl was great, to be fair mate it doesnt really matter how wide the tractor is really, the guy will tend to be easier on u if u do it it a rural location rather than it a town.

the rules on what u can and cant tow when u pass ur test are that strict really, im sure most ppl dont stick to them

oh yeh and another thing i learnt on me test day is that ur not sopposed to drive to ur test site someone else has to do it soposedly

Look under the Driving Standards Agency, it takes up to six weeks for them to organise it.

the tractor test is a joke - basicallly 20 minuites of driving around the local pub.. she chose there because it was the smallest circuit she could find - the person from the dsa just runs round with a clipboard watching you drive around and occasionally asks you to do something crazy... like an emergancy stop!!! Geeked

it is nice to know that you are legally driving afterwards though!
also if you have a single seat tractor - you can drive all the way to where you take it - take it, fail and then drive all the way back... which is worrying!

    Eat well, eat british!
