  • Re: BLUETONGUE

We need to ponder. Are these bluetongue infected animals (sheep/cattle) symptomatic or a-symptomatic? The Bluetongue vaccine does not prevent infection, only reduces/prevents symptoms? Hence these 'cases' may be in vaccinated animals. Vaccinated animals will have a virus load, although lower...

  • Tesco's Blue Tongue Corridor

Heard a rumour from a usually unimpeachable source that DEFRA are keeping an access corridor BT control free down the west coast so that in the worst case scenario Tesco can get access to scottish livestock. Not sure how the logic of this works, any ideas anyone?

  • Cost of bluetongue vaccinations

A couple of people have raised concerns that they are being over-charged by vets for their bluetongue vaccinations. DEFRA initially said the vaccines should cost £27.50-£33.00 for the 50ml bottles (55-66p per ml) and about £16.35-£19.65 for the 20ml bottles (82-98p per ml) plus VAT, to cover the overhead...

  • Do DEFRA employees deserve a higher pay increase?

DEFRA employees are to vote on possible strike action, after rejecting a pay offer which equates to just 2.9% overall. In light of the 'triple whammy' of disease the industry has faced with foot and mouth, bluetongue and avian flu, union members are arguing this is a 'sorry reward' for...

  • Re: Foot-and-mouth - latest developments including overnight news

The Tory Party has issued a list of quite useful questions which it says DEFRA now needs to answer: Why hasn't Hilary Benn made a statement to the House of Commons? Is there any link between the leaking pipe revealed today and the original outbreak? How many inspections, and what was inspected, by...

  • Foot and mouth/ bluetongue control zones - a bit of humour

I thought you might enjoy this piece written by FW columnist Stephen Carr. It is his alternative guide to all the restrictions in place. "You may have found the latest DEFRA announcements concerning changes to foot-and-mouth movement restrictions rather confusing. Always ready to assist my farming...

[quote user="Peter Wells"] romneymarsh. Do I follow you correctly in that there are 23 variations on BT that may well come our way? If so, I can see what you mean about DEFRA trying, at this early stage to get out of any responsibility for helping thousands of farmers treat the disease . [...

  • Blue Tongue DEFRA spin

We have all got to wake up to the spin . DEFRA have now re named the BT zones. Control has been replaced by Protection. The protection becomes surviellance. Control infers a managed approach to eradication through blanket cover vaccination, Protection is not such a specific term . Benn talks of a vaccine...
