  • Wish me luck

I know it's been a while since I wandered in..(long story). BUT...I have just written a nagging letter to my landlords (housing Association) asking why I can keep pigeons in my back garden and not chickens! I am awaiting a reply and hopefully permission...considering I know chickens can't be...

  • Re: Anchor "free range" cows???

I have always bought free range, eggs, poultry, pork etc and have never given a thought to cows - stupidly believing them to always be free range. I have always tried to buy local beef when possible, but now I am not so sure I should. After walking past a local farm most days for the past 6 months I...

  • natural ventilation in poultry sheds

Can any one point me in the right direction for advice in converting my hen shed from a forced ventilation system (it used to be used for broiler production) fans on the side and ridge inlet to a naturally ventillated shed. I have to use a lot of fans to keep the atmostphere good in the sheds because...

  • Re: Chicken Out Campaign

I can't work out if it is linked to the Compassion in World Farming's ongoing Chickens Out! campaign. Free range chicken is indeed a rapidly growing part of the poultry sector. However, I do find the site very confusing and muddled as it goes on about the benefits of free range and encourages...

  • How far does the average hen walk in a day?

Just thought I'd highlight an interesting trial carried out by Clarence Court to highlight British Egg Week. The experiment involved attaching a tiny counter to the hen's leg and monitoring the results. They concluded an average hen's step is four inches and collated the results over a 16...
