  • Cost of bluetongue vaccinations

A couple of people have raised concerns that they are being over-charged by vets for their bluetongue vaccinations. DEFRA initially said the vaccines should cost £27.50-£33.00 for the 50ml bottles (55-66p per ml) and about £16.35-£19.65 for the 20ml bottles (82-98p per ml) plus VAT, to cover the overhead...

All done this morning, didn't bother with sterimatic, just changed needles at the end of every pen. Although I had the vet in to do some which may be heading to Scotland, Wales and N Ireland and he used Sterimatic (his first time with one) and it seemed to work ok. Thnakfully we had just under 100...

SJK, best bet is not to have it all at once unless you're going to use it all in one go. We're vaccinating tomorrow, so I guess your vaccine will be along shortly if you've not already had "the call" already! Best of luck with it, here's hoping it all goes to plan. Jonathan...

Thanks for the praise, I have to say I don't deserve all the credit, our photographer/video man Jonathan Page is the real artist on this one and has done an excellent on pulling it together. Cheers, Jonathan

  • Re: Bluetongue vaccine ordering

Hopefully, anyone wanting to have their stock certified as vaccinated shouldn't actually need to have their stock vaccinated by the vet, just have a vet "supervise" the vaccination. I'm not entirely sure what form this supervision may take, but it may be that they have to watch the...

A beacon of hope is rapidly emerging today with suggestions from informed sources within the DEFRA stakeholder group that bluetongue vaccine will become available in the protection zone as early as next week. DEFRA haven't confirmed it yet, but aren't denying it either. With no cases of "new"...

Corky, as others have said the point of vaccinating is to protect your own stock. If those across the border are unable to get vaccine as soon as you there is nothing you can do about that, but failing to vaccinate your own stock will leave them open to infection. Meanwhile, having spoken to vets and...

  • Re: Bluetongue vaccine ordering

I take it you've placed an order then Peter? The prices your vet is quoting are in line with the DEFRA recommended prices, although the 50ml pack price is at the lower end and the 20ml pack price at the top end! His estimate of mid-June to July is interesting and may yet be proved right, although...

  • Bluetongue vaccine ordering

According to this week's FWi poll about half the livestock farmers responding haven't yet ordered any bluetongue vaccine. So, who are they and why aren't they telling their vets how much vaccine they're likely to need. It may only be a rough guess for many farms at the moment, but getting...
