FORMS of modulation which would limit the total subsidy paid to individual farm businesses found favour with a majority of farmers attending a meeting called by Rotherham Borough Council to discuss its draft response to governments consultation on the future of British agriculture.

Trevor Ward, who runs a small suckler herd near Rotherham, said it was significant that although the councils draft response document, presented to the meeting, was against capping, most of the invited farmers appeared to take the opposite view.

"If all local authorities consulted farmers in a similar way, and took their views into account when responding to the government consultation, maybe we small ones might get somewhere."
