A Selective Dry Cow Therapy programme (SDCT) is a dry off plan, created with your vet, that determines which cows receive OrbeSeal alone and which receive OrbeSeal plus Antibiotic Dry Cow Therapy (ADCT).
Excellent hygiene and correct infusion technique are critical for the success of the programme and reduced risk of udder infections.
Follow these step-by-step instructions for optimal results:
1. Cleaning the teats
If teats are visibly dirty then they will need to be cleaned and wiped dry with separate disposable paper towels. You may use a rapid acting pre-dip before the next step, leave for 30 seconds and wipe dry each teat again. Strip 3 to 4 draws of foremilk and discard.
2. Disinfecting the teats
a) Thoroughly disinfect the whole surface of the teat with a disposable alcohol or spirit soaked pad. Repeat until the teat wipe comes away clean. Always use a new pair of gloves for the treatment of each cow.
b) Disinfect the far teats before the near teats to avoid accidental contamination of previously disinfected teats (as numbered).
3. If using Antibiotic Dry Cow Therapy
If using ADCT in combination with OrbeSeal, apply one ADCT tube per quarter, nearest teats first (as shown numbered in picture 3 below), to minimise contamination of teats that have not been treated. Then repeat the disinfection procedure.
4. Applying OrbeSeal
Keep the syringes clean whilst preparing the teats, be careful not to touch the nozzle of the syringe and DO NOT immerse the syringes in water.
Starting with the teat nearest you, insert the OrbeSeal syringe nozzle into the teat canal, firmly grasp the base of the teat at the udder attachment and slowly inject all contents. Use one complete syringe per quarter. Do not massage. OrbeSeal must remain in the teat canal.
5. Disinfect and identify
Apply a post-milking disinfectant to cover at least 90% of each teat. Mark each treated cow and keep her away from the milk supply. Treated animals should be allowed to stand for 30 minutes to allow the teats to close.
