Spring drilling and potato planting is progressing well across the country, as soil temperatures climb and drier weather helps growers get on heavier land.

It isn’t all work and no fun, however, as spring drilling makes the perfect excuse to get drones flying and cameras rolling with some fantastic videos cropping up as a result.

We’ve picked our favourite nine videos to share with you to celebrate the 2016 spring drilling season at it’s best.

Seed-bed preparations in Norfolk

The guys at Norfolk-based Baker Agriculture took to the skies with a drone to capture the amazing patterns created while cultivating ploughed land with a Vaderstad Carrier 500 and John Deere 6930.

Spring beans are set to be drilled on this land.

Drilling spring beans to Biffy Clyro

Meanwhile, the first lot of spring beans were drilled on the Eastbury Estate near Blandford in Dorset at the end of February.

There’s some skilled drone piloting as the camera swoops over the farm’s new Fendt 828 and Horsch 6m drill.

Northumberland spud planting and spring barley drilling

Grower David Park has uploaded several videos fresh from the field, after filming a flurry of activity on farms in his area.

It’s still a little early for work to begin on Mr Park’s own farm, so he’s been busy filming potato planting on neighbour David Humphreys’ farm and spring barley drilling with George Daniel on Percy Farms.

These videos don’t have any sound, but are still great to watch.

Spring beans near Retford, Nottinghamshire

More highly skilled drone flying here, this it’s from Henry Ogle in the East Midlands as he zooms his drone up close to the Horsch Sprinter 8ST drill and the Case IH Magnum 280 that’s pulling it.

Speaking to Farmers Weekly, Mr Ogle said: “I used my DJI Phantom drone and camera this spring to take this video of my neighbour Tom Greenhalgh of Mill Hill Farm Ltd, drilling his Vertigo spring beans whilst I patiently waited for my land to dry out ready for peas.”

A great choice of music too, Henry!

Racing the weather on Easter Sunday

William Sergeant filmed a short video report as the last of his spring barley was drilled on Easter Sunday, before the weather broke.

In his video Mr Sergeant says: “It’s Easter Sunday – most people are in church, but most farmers are working.”

Spring drilling from many angles

This video kicks off with a drivers view from the cab of a John Deere 6215r and then we see some amazing footage from a camera that’s riding on the tail of the 6m Vaderstad drill as it plants spring bean seed.

It’s a rare chance to see kit working at very close range, without any of the risks to safety. You might want to turn your volume down however, as the rumbling sound of the drill is quite loud.
