Sandy Norrie was on combining today (8 September) at AJ Duncan Farms’ Muirden Farm, Turriff, Aberdeenshire.

“We’ve been very lucky compared with the rest of the country,” he said.

Mr Norrie was halfway through his spring barley, and had just made a start on the wheat.

So far the early wheat had yielded 8.9t/ha (3.6t/acre), but better crops of Alchemy, Robigus, Richmond, Predator and Riband were to come.

The same was true of the Waggon spring barley, which had averaged 6.8t/ha (2.75t/acre) so far.

Oilseed rape had been about average at 4t/ha (1.65t/acre), but the winter barley was tremendous, he said.

Siberia topped the yield table at 11.6t/ha (4.7t/acre), with Boost averaging 10t/ha (4t/acre) and a trial plot of Volume yielding 9.5t/ha (3.8t/acre).

Drilling has also progressed well, with about 283ha (700 acres) each of oilseed rape and winter barley now in the ground.

 Syngenta

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
