Average wheat harvest in Kent

“We’ll finish today hopefully,” said John Beslee in Southfleet, Kent. Winter wheat was “fairly average” with 140ha of Solstice and Soissons yielding 7.5–8.75t/ha.

“We’re quite happy, it’s reasonable for us.”

Protein levels and Hagbergs were good. He planned to grow only Cordiale next year as it would be better for storage, and Solstice had been fairly tough and a bit flat in places this year.

Forty hectares of Carita oilseed rape yielded an average 2.47t/ha. “It is the first year we’ve grown it and I will not grow it again. It did not yield as it might have done.” He planned to grow Splendor in some fresh ground next year.

He added: “We’re lucky it rained at the right times for us so I think harvest went fairly well.”
