Harvest got underway yesterday (27 July) at Martin Howlett’s Deer Park Farm, Callington, Cornwall, with the first of the winter barley.

“With thunderstorms forecast this afternoon we wanted to crack on and get as much in as possible,” he said. With just 1.6ha (4 acres) cut so far, the Sequel winter barley was yielding 6.2t/ha (2.5t/acre) – about 1.2t/ha (0.5t/acre) above average.

“The Saffron is looking really good and is nearly ready – I’ll be disappointed if that doesn’t do 6.2t/ha (2.5t/acre), which is good for this land,” said Mr Howlett.

After that would come the Mascani oats and the Fuego spring beans, which looked fantastic, he added.
