Former Barometer farmer Ben Atkinson expects to start harvest this weekend (19/20 July) at Grange Farm, Rippingdale, Lincs, about five days behind last year.
“The earliest rape has been swathed for 10 days and it’s still 14% moisture,” he said. With 607ha (1500 acres) of oilseed rape to cut, he expected to be into the Castille first, which looked reasonable. “It’s always difficult tell until you get the combine in though.”
After the rape he has 1348ha (3330 acres) of Oakley, Humber and Cordiale wheat to cut, as well as some beans. “There’s very little being done around us – we’re four to five days behind last year, but it’s hard to tell what a normal year is these days.”
