Bucks wheat yields down 15%
Wheat yields were about 15% at Kensham Farms, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, but given the season Charlie Edgley was reasonably pleased with that.
“We had 688ha (1700 acres) of continuous wheat to cut in total – we’re now down to the last 80ha (200 acres), which is a bit later than last year,” he said.
Overall, yields had averaged 6.8t/ha (2.8t/acre), across the varieties Hereward, Solstice, Deben, Malacca and Soissons. However, the Canadian spring red wheat AC Barrie was a complete disaster, said Mr Edgley. “It only made 2.5t/ha (1t/acre – thank goodness we only had a small area of it.”
All the milling wheat cut before the rain was full spec, but nothing had been tested since.
