Colin Philliphs is making a start on naked oats today (3 August), after enjoying bumper oilseed rape yields at Dairy Farm, Penhros, Monmouth.
“We’ve never grown naked oats before, so I won’t hazard a guess at what they will yield,” he said.
But the 53ha (130 acres) of oilseed rape averaged an excellent 5.4t/ha (2.2t/acre). “It’s all gone very well – we’ve had a fantastic harvest so far.”
Cabernet topped the yields at 5.8t/ha (2.35t/acre) in one field, with Vision and Osprey both at 5.1t/ha (2.05t/acre) and Castille at 4.8t/ha (1.95t/acre).
Assuming the weather stayed dry, Mr Philliphs expected to be into wheat by the end of the week. “It looks reasonably well, but the forecast isn’t great.”
