Bill Harbour of Sheldwich, Faversham had his work cut out at Gosmere Farm, after cutting the first 10ha of his 31ha Solstice winter wheat yesterday. He expected to combine more today, after a load of oilseed rape had been picked up.

“It’s all happening,“ he said.

The first loads of Solstice came in at 18.5% moisture, but Mr Harbour finished at 16.4%. Bushel weight was 78-79 kg/hl and it yielded approximately 10.5-11t/ha, although there was more to come in. It was looking very well with very little lodging.

Mr Harbour had Xi19 wheat with a little lodging which wouldn’t be ready for a week. He also had some Kahuna peas which he was desiccating with Roundup (glyphosate).

He hoped to combine today with the sunny weather and expected moistures to begin at around 17%.  He also hoped to swath Borage today, which he intended to cut in 10 days time.

Mr Harbour was pleased with progress and said, “With a fine week we’ll be away.”
