Two growers from Kent and one from Bedfordshire have made the shortlist in the Nabim Milling Wheat Challenge

Andrew Robinson, farm manager of Heathcote farms in Befordshire, Andrew Martin of Broadstream Farming, Kent, and Mark Boyd of John Boyd farms, Kent, are all finalists in the competition to find the best milling wheat grower in the country.

The finalists were chosen for their forward-thinking attitude, technical competency and history of growing consistently high-quality milling wheat.

“The milling wheat challenge is very important, as we want to encourage farmers to grow the wheat our bread-making customers require,” said Martin Savage, trade policy manager for Nabim.

Growing milling wheat that meets millers specifications is still a challenge for the industry.

“It demands a disciplined approach and attention to detail and competitions like this are a great opportunity to share knowledge,” said Andrew Watts, NFU combinable crops chairman.

Judging of the three growers will take place in June, when the judges will walk crops, inspect storage facilities and interview the growers.
