A team of four students from Newcastle University won the 2013 Cereals Challenge which involved growing a crop of winter barley on the Cereals site at Boothby Graffoe.

Team members Lachlam Scott and Caroline Hogg picked up the award and a prize of £1,000, which will be shared with other team members Greg Colbrook and Charles Garrard.

The Cereals Challenge trophy was presented by Velcourt’s farms director Ken Shipley.

Now in its fourth year the competition challenged six teams, from universities across the country, to grow a winter barley plot.

Judges praised the Newcastle students for their focus on a comprehensive and effective agronomy package.
