Harvest is almost finished at Clive Apps’ farm near Romney, Kent, and not a moment too soon.

“Nothing has gone quite according to plan this year,” he said. “The combine dropped a valve and ruined the engine.”

In total that cost him about £25,000 through new parts and delayed or lost harvesting on his own, and contracted land.

However, yields had been good, with the Cordiale and Claire averaging over 10t/ha (4t/acre) including the upland fields.

Mr Apps now had 8ha (20 acres) of wheat to finish on his own farm, and 60ha (150 acres) of contract combining to do.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
