Crops flooded in Morpeth
Peter Hogg has been cutting wheat at up to 28% moisture at Causey Park Farm, Morpeth, Northumberland, but now only has 6ha (15 acres) to finish.
“We’ve been cutting at almost embarrassing moisture contents, but it turns out we have probably made the right decision,” he said.
“There are fields flooded around here, practically to the point of being written off. Some people further north have hardly started and it’s impossible to travel at the moment.”
Yields in general had been above average, with wheat at 7.2t/ha (2.9t/acre), oats at 4.9t/ha (2t/acre), winter barley at 6.2t/ha (2.5t/acre) and oilseed rape at 3.2t/ha (1.3t/acre).
However, milling quality had gone, and Mr Hogg had to mix wet oats with dry to get them through the dryer. “The drying costs are horrendous.”
He had drilled some rape before the torrential rain. “I doubt it will grow now.”
