David Butler has drafted in a second combine to help him get more crops in between the showers at East Wick Farm, Wootton Rivers, Marlborough, Wilts.

“We are deeply concerned – we haven’t cut any wheat, which is unheard of,” he said. “These are the worst weather conditions we have had since 1985 and we’ve realised we need some assistance.”

Mr Butler hoped to finish his oilseed rape today (15 August), having completed the winter barley three weeks ago. “The yields were good but we’ve had at least two weeks packed up since then.

“We’ll go at every opportunity but the moisture contents have been off the scale.”

Mr Butler’s barley averaged over 7.4t/ha (3t/acre) – well up on the usual average of 6.1t/ha (2.5t/acre).

He now had 445ha (1100 acres) of milling wheat to cut. “The crops are still good with high yield potential, and are still standing up. But the wheat is starting to suffer because it’s over-ripe.”

Crop: Winter barley
Yield: > 7.4t/ha  (3t/acre)

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
