After five years of letting his land out, David Price has returned to farming at Presteigne, Powys, this year, and timed his barley harvest perfectly.

“We started combining last weekend and finished at about 4.00 on Monday (28 July) – and the rain tipped down at 6.00,” he said. “We’ve had some fantastic yields – one field did 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre).

The 20ha (50 acres) of Saffron averaged 8t/ha (3.25t/acre) at 13-14% moisture, and the straw is all baled and in the barn.

Mr Price’s 57ha (140 acres) of Alchemy, Istabraq and Oakley winter wheat looked superb, and was still about three weeks away, he said. After that he also had 28ha (70 acres) of oats to do.
