Doug Fowlie was half-way through his spring barley near Longside, Peterhead, Scotland, and hoped to be back into wheat tomorrow (5 September).

The 134ha (330 acres) of Optic had yielded about average, at 5.6t/ha (2.25t/acre), and despite high screenings and nitrogen, Mr Fowlie hoped it would make the malting grade.

The one field of Robigus wheat cut so far did exceptionally well at 10t/ha (4t/acre), and quality looked good, he said.

He now had 30ha (75 acres) of wheat to finish, with the 150ha (370 acres) of Oxbridge spring barley still a week away.

Pastoral winter barley yielded below average at 7.8t/ha (3.15t/acre), and the oilseed rape was poor at 3.3t/ha (1.35t/acre).

Mr Fowlie had drilled all of his rape, having missed out on the worst of the rain, but farmers across Aberdeenshire still had half their spring barley to cut, and 90-95% of their wheat, he said.

 Syngenta

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
