Duncan Whiteman has nearly finished harvest at Arlescott Farm, Telford, Shropshire, and is pleased with yields so far.

“We got the majority of the wheat done in six days – we’ve been almost finished for three weeks,” he said.

The new Claas Tucano combine had swept through the crops once it overcame teething problems, leaving just 7ha (18 acres) of wheat and 12ha (30 acres) of linseed to do.

“We can’t fit the last field of wheat in until the rape has gone, which will hopefully be tomorrow (17 September),” said Mr Whiteman.

Solstice, cut before the rain, would hopefully go for milling, but the Xi19 left in the field was unlikely to make the grade, he added.

Ambrosia had yielded very well as a second wheat, at nearly 10t/ha (4t/acre), with Alchemy exceeding that as a first wheat.

 Syngenta

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
