Wheat harvest is nearly over for Alan Willet hoped to complete winter wheat today at Ernest Doe Farm, Ulting, near Maldon, Essex.

Mr Willet had a third of his 24ha (60 acres) of Soissons winter wheat to finish. Cutting began at 13.5% moisture on Tuesday [7 August] yields about 6.75t/ha (2.7 t/acre).

He completed 80ha (200 acres) of Hereward winter wheat a week ago. It yielded on average 8t/ha (3.2 t/acre). Protein was at 13.5% and Hagbergs were about 310.

Mr Willet had also finished 44ha (110 acres) Pearl winter barley two to three weeks ago. It yielded disappointingly at 6.25t/ha (2.5 t/acre) with 1.7% nitrogen.

He had 12ha (30 acres) of spring barley which he thought would yield less than t/ha (2t/acre). “It nearly died in the dry April” he said.

“It’s been a nightmare with rain off and on. Slowly but surely we’re getting there,” Mr Willet said.
