Tim Cooper expected to finish cutting 72ha of Expert oilseed rape today (July 19) in Wix, Essex. The crop was “yielding well” at 4.7t/ha.
He said the hot and dry weather meant yields were slightly less than last year. But despite having suffered from a lack of water, crop quality was fine.
“The crops were wet when we started cutting and dry when we finished.”
Mr Cooper said Malacca winter wheat was very dry and ripening prematurely. He expected to start within a few weeks, which would be about average for him. “We’ve no great hopes for the wheat. It could look better.”
Neighbouring farms were slowly starting to cut barley and oilseed rape, but everything seemed fine in the area, he said.
