Ian Elsworth is two-thirds of the way through harvest at Raskelf Farm, York, and is enjoying above average yields on all crops.
“We’re combining today, and I’d really like to push on and get everything in the shed, but we’ve got rain forecast tonight (24 August),” he said.
“In May, we were worried that yields were going to be down, but it’s actually the opposite; we’re over our five-year average.”
Oakley and Invicta had done particularly well, at over 10t/ha (4t/acre). “But we haven’t got a weighbridge on the farm, so that’s just over the combine.”
Cordiale as a second wheat was respectable, but Grafton was disappointing, he added.
Excalibur and Catana oilseed rape both yielded above average, although the hybrid Palace was disappointing. “We’ll be dropping that.”
Quench spring barley was also better than normal. “It’s gone off the farm and I haven’t had the dreaded phone call yet, so I hope it’s made malting.”
