Catherine Thompson has finished harvest at Holme House, Holme on Spalding Moor, Yorkshire, apart from a few fields which have been flooded.

“The river came over and flooded our land – we’re just waiting for it to dry out,” she said.

It had affected 16ha (40 acres) of wheat and 6ha (15 acres) of spring rape.

“It is bottomless soil so we will get stuck if we go now, but if it dries out we hope to get it this week.”

Yields had been very pleasing, although with a lot of wet grain still to dry Mrs Thomson could not put a figure on them.

Wheat quality had been reasonable, although the later Brompton had sprouted. The oats had also been pleasing, yielding well and producing a bright sample, she added.

Farmers in the area had harvested a lot over the weekend, leaving about 10% of combinable crops, including a lot of beans, to finish off.

 Syngenta

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
