Jim Cargill finished harvest at Coldstream Farm, Fettercairn, Aberdeenshire, about 10 days ago (16 September), and most farms in the area were finishing up this week.

“I think that some of the very large farms have got bits to cut yet but we’ve had a good few days and it’s amazing what you’ll cut in a week.”

Mr Cargill was delighted with wheat yields of 10t/ha (4t/acre), and having cut his wheat before the worst of the weather, quality had been good, too.

He was now busy lifting potatoes and planting daffodils which should have been in a month ago.

Although he had managed to drill his oilseed rape, he had abandoned hope of getting winter barley in this year.

 Syngenta

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
